For Halloween, the Hôtel de la Marine, the monument on place de la Concorde, opens its rooms to ghosts. On Friday 30 October, 5.30pm–9pm, the Bal des Revenants (the ghosts' ball) mixes the eras: hoop skirts, frock coats, crinolines, every century of place de la Concorde comes back to dance.
The Carnet de Bals association leads the evening. In the main courtyard, free and with no booking, you can watch or join the participatory dances: waltz, quadrille, polka, minuet, with the steps taught on the spot. In the state rooms, under crystal chandeliers and gilded panelling, dancers give demonstrations of historical dances, with a €9 ticket.
If you'd rather play detective, the monument also runs La Nuit des Revenants the same evening: an immersive investigation through the apartments, 5.30pm–7.30pm, with lights and sound, about an experiment by Monsieur de Fontanieu that goes wrong. Ages 12 and up, €14, €8 for under-26s, booking required.
Come in costume if you like, and keep an eye on the weather: the courtyard dances are open to the sky. Metro Concorde.
