The Notre-Dame Christmas market sets up again in square René Viviani, the small garden on quai de Montebello, from 26 November to 27 December. Cross the Seine from the cathedral forecourt and you are there: white chalets between the trees, Notre-Dame as the backdrop.

No imported trinkets here. The stalls are run by French craftspeople selected for what they make themselves: jewellery, ceramics, hand-painted shawls, knitwear, wooden toys.

For food, expect regional specialities: foie gras, cured meats from the south-west, cheese, pretzels, pain d'épices (French gingerbread), macarons and nougat. There is a seated food area, plus roasted chestnuts and vin chaud (mulled wine) to warm your hands.

Santa Claus comes by every day for photos. Children get a free, supervised drawing workshop, with a soft toy to win in the prize draw on Sundays at 4.30pm.

Entry is free. You have until 27 December.
