Raï Sentimental holds its first edition on Saturday 17 October at La Marbrerie, a concert hall and canteen in Montreuil, just east of Paris. The idea fits in one line: 100% original raï (the pop music born in Oran, Algeria), no odd remixes.

The night moves from the golden age of the late 1980s and early 1990s, with Hasni, Khaled and Mami, to the singers reinventing the genre today: Cheb Bello, Warda Charlomanti, Abdou Gambetta.

You know the moment: the voice distorts, the mic is badly set, the singer stops for a few bars and lets the synthesizer wail. Arms go up on their own, eyes close. Melancholy and joy at once.

The date is deliberate: the organisers picked 17 October, a highly symbolic day in French-Algerian history.

Doors open at 11.30pm. Entry is €10 before midnight and €15 after, plus booking fees. The bar and canteen take cards only.
