Merzbild Einunddreissig by Kurt Schwitters, a collage of paper, lace, wood and fabric in blue and ochre tones

Photo · Sprengel Museum Hannover

Kurt Schwitters hadn't been shown in France since 1994. The Musée Picasso puts that right with more than 300 works: paintings, collages, assemblages, notebooks, photos, typography.

Schwitters made art out of whatever was lying around: tickets, newspapers, wire, driftwood. He called it Merz. You'll see his collages crackling with paper and, above all, a reconstruction of the Merzbau, the white, angular room he sculpted inside his house in Hanover, destroyed by bombs in 1943.

There's also the Ursonate, his poem made of pure sounds: on 10 October, two bird imitators transpose it in the museum garden. And running through it all, the echoes with Picasso, the other great recycler of everyday things.

Tickets are €16, €12 reduced, and free on the first Sunday of the month. Book a time slot online, because the Hôtel Salé, the mansion that houses the museum, fills up fast. It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30am–6pm, by Metro Saint-Sébastien-Froissart, Chemin Vert or Saint-Paul. You have until 7 February 2027.
