Until 1 November, the Jardin d'Acclimatation, the amusement park at the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, swaps pumpkins for marigolds. Smiling skulls, paper garlands and bright colours: the park marks the Mexican Day of the Dead, which is more of a party than a fright night.
Three rides change costume. The river ride becomes the Rivière Envoûtée, with mist and prankster skeletons. The Labyrinthe Maya loses you between mirrors, and the Samba de los Muertos spins flower-covered balloons. The last two run on Wednesdays, weekends and every day of the French school holidays.
The music comes from Arrieras Somos, a ten-woman mariachi orchestra playing along the paths. You can have your face painted as a catrina (the elegant skeleton lady), then eat fajitas, empanadas, churros and pan de muerto, a brioche scented with orange blossom.
During the autumn school holidays there is more: a Mexican tale at 1.30pm, traditional dances, a magic show by the Dragonfly company from 17 October to 1 November, and the Baile del Fuego fire show at 6.30pm.
Entry is €7, then €4.50 per ride ticket. Take metro line 1 to Les Sablons, come at opening time and stay for the fire show.
